More companies are seeking building permits in DeKalb County so far this year, a sign of economic strength in a county that was hit hard by the recession.
DeKalb issued 872 commercial and industrial building permits through the first three months of this year, a significantly higher number than in each of the previous three years, according to the county’s first quarter financial update. At the same point last year, businesses had obtained 563 building permits.
More housing construction is also on the way, with 518 residential building permits issued by the county through March. By comparison, 402 residential building permits had been approved through the first quarter of 2014.
The number of companies seeking business licenses remained stable compared to last year, with 534 issued so far this year compared to 539 in 2014. Only 272 business licenses were obtained from the county in 2013, and 328 were issued in 2012.
The financial update was provided to the DeKalb Commission during its Tuesday meeting. The commission will soon begin reviewing its midyear adjustments to the county’s budget.
