DeKalb County Commissioner Stan Watson has joined a group of elected officials and county employees who have turned in their government-issued charge cards, which have become a symbol of loose spending of taxpayer money.

Watson returned his purchasing card to the county and it was destroyed, according to his office.

Twenty-seven DeKalb employees' purchasing card accounts have been closed since June, including those belonging to several commissioners, judges and administrators, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported this week.

Ethics complaints are pending against four commissioners, including Watson, who have been accused of using their cards for personal purchases. Former Commissioner Elaine Boyer pleaded guilty to last year to federal charges including purchasing card spending on airline tickets and hotel rooms.
