DeKalb County residents donated 25,000 bottles of water that are being shipped to Flint, Mich., where drinking water has been contaminated by lead.

DeKalb Commissioner Stan Watson collected the water during a community breakfast at Southwest DeKalb High on Saturday, and it's scheduled to arrive in Flint on Thursday. Donations came from homeowners associations, churches and other community members.

“We were able to bring together people in our community as a catalyst to make sure we take care of water for Flint,” Watson said. “It was a great effort.”

The Teamsters shipped the water at no charge, and it will be distributed by Flint Commissioner Branda Clack, Watson said.

Watson also partnered with the NFL Players Association to collect the water.
