Two dozen elected officials from across the state have recently thrown their support to former City Schools of Decatur school board member Valarie Wilson as she runs for Georgia school superintendent.

That backing is noteworthy, as many of those who have endorsed Wilson currently serve in the state Legislature with state Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan, the Austell Democrat who is challenging Wilson in the July 22 Democratic runoff.

Wilson, who has also been endorsed by a series of unions and education groups, was the top vote-getter in the May 20 Democratic primary, with Morgan coming in second. The winner of the runoff will face the Republican nominee in the general election in November.
