A metropolitan Atlanta student was named one of the state’s top two youth volunteers of 2016 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, officials said.

Damacia Howard, a seventh-grader at Georgia Cyber Academy in College Park, also will spend four days in Washington with honorees from other states for national recognition events with a shot at being named one of the country’s top 10 volunteers.

A resident of Union City, Damacia has collected thousands of books in her community for students in Africa while working with a national charity, Books for Africa. She was presented with a medal Thursday by a Prudential representative.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a national program honoring volunteerism.
