Georgia became the third state with multiple schools among the top 20 public universities in the country, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Georgia Tech was No. 7 for the second year. The University of Georgia ranks 18 on the 2017 list, up three positions from No. 21 last year. Both moved up on the annual list of best national schools, with Georgia Tech up two spots to No. 34 and UGA up five spots to No. 56.
The state joined Virginia (2) and California (6) as states with multiple schools. U.S. News and World Report ranks the top 30 public universities annually as part of its announcement on the top national universities, released today.
UGA officials said the university benefited from an improved academic peer assessment rating. That used opinions from presidents, provosts and deans at peer institutions.
The rankings are coveted and highly touted by colleges and have long been used by some parents and students to compare schools before enrolling.
UGA officials pointed to multiple initiatives that boosted the school to 18 on the list of top public universities, including a small class size strategy that added 50 faculty members and 300 courses on high-demand subjects.
“It’s no surprise that demand for a UGA education continues to surge,” Pamela Whitten, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, said in a statement. “Our long tradition of excellence and bold new academic initiatives have created an unparalleled learning environment that fosters the highest levels of student success.”
