Sixteen schools — nine of them in metro Atlanta — have petitioned the State Charter Schools Commission to become charter schools under the newly formed state agency. The commission will decide in October whether to grant the charters. The applicants are: Utopian Academy for the Arts, Clayton County Clayton County 6-8; Statesboro STEAM College and Career Academy, Bulloch County, Statewide K-5; Byron Peach Charter High School, Peach County Peach County 9-12; Georgia Fugees Academy, DeKalb County, Statewide 6-12; International Charter School of Atlanta, Forsyth County Statewide K-12; Fulton Science Academy High School, Fulton County Statewide 9-12; Fulton Sunshine Academy Elementary School, Fulton County, Statewide K-5; Cobb Preparatory Academy, Cobb County, Statewide K-8; Hephzibah Charter Academy, Richmond County, Richmond County K-8; The Academy for Classical Education, Bibb County, Bibb County K-12; Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) Middle School, Fulton, DeKalb or Gwinnett County, Statewide 6-8; St. Augustine Preparatory Academy of Excellence, Bibb County, Statewide 9-12; Nexus Academy of Atlanta, Atlanta Public Schools 9-12; Cirrus Academy Charter School, Bibb County. Statewide K-12; Noble Virtual School of Georgia Virtual Statewide 3-12; Rivers School Dougherty County, Dougherty County K-8.
