Report: Georgia fares well in pre-k enrollment survey

April 8, 2015

Georgia is doing a better job than most states enrolling children in publicly-funded, pre-kindergarten programs, according to a new federal report.

Nearly 60 percent of 4-year-olds in Georgia are in such programs, according to a U.S. Department of Education report released Tuesday. Only six states and Washington, D.C. had higher percentages of children enrolled in such programs, the report found.

The report, “A Matter of Equity: Preschool in America,” found 28 percent of 4-year-olds are enrolled in publicly funded, pre-kindergarten programs, which is disturbing to federal officials. Education officials believe children who enroll in such programs are better prepared academically for kindergarten.
