Civil rights icon and U.S. John Lewis will deliver the keynote address at Emory University’s spring commencement on May 12.

Lewis, a leader of the national Civil Rights Movement and youngest speaker from the historic 1963 March on Washington, has represented Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987. For his lifetime achievements, Lewis was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010.

At the commencement, Lewis will also receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. Emory alumnus Ben F. Johnson III, former chair of Emory’s Board of Trustees for 13 years, and Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman College will also receive honorary degrees from the university.
