North Cobb High School officials say they are investigating racist comments allegedly made by a student on social media.
A parent posted a picture of the comments, apparently made on Snapchat, on her Facebook page. In it, the poster writes mentioning black people as the n-word, wanting slavery back and wanting to be the person who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, among other things.
The student also mentions “exterminating all (n-words)” and wishes that black people never were created.
One parent who posted the image on her Facebook page said a student found responsible was suspended for three days. Cobb County School District officials did not comment on the student’s punishment, citing privacy issues.
The school administration sent a text to parents alerting them to an internal investigation. A letter sent to parents decried the message in the social media post.
“The North Cobb High School administration and staff does not condone this type of profane and bigoted behavior in our school,” the letter stated. “The message was deplorable and we denounce everything about it. We take this matter very seriously and we are addressing it in accordance with Cobb County School District policies and procedures.
“We will use this as an opportunity to remind ourselves why we are here and that we, as a school community, stand for respect and inclusion. This must be a place where all are free to learn in a safe and welcoming environment.”
Incidents involving racially-charged comments have been frequent in metro Atlanta lately. In November, two Cross Keys High School teachers were forced to resign amid comments made about immigrants after President Donald Trump's election. A Muslim teacher in Gwinnett County received a threat after the election as well.
