A leading Morehouse College faculty member is demanding an explanation from the board of trustees concerning its vote not to renew the contract of its president.

“We, the faculty of Morehouse College, strongly object to the decision to the Board of Trustees not to renew the contract of President John S. Wilson without explanation and without the inclusion of faculty and student trustees in the discussion and decision,” Derrick Bryan, chair of the school’s faculty council, said in a statement. “The faculty also expresses concern regarding the timing of the Board’s decision. We demand an explanation and will investigatie these decisions.”

Bryan is also an associate professor and chairs Morehouse’s sociology department.

The trustees voted Friday not to renew Wilson’s contract, which expires in June. Trustee leaders praised Wilson in a statement released Sunday, but did not discuss their decision.

Wilson, who graduated from the college in 1979, was named president in November 2012 and began his tenure in 2013. Wilson said Tuesday he wished he could serve "another 20 years" but is eager to finish the remainder of his term.
