Dozens of students at Ronald E. McNair High School in DeKalb County were accepted on the spot during an in-house college fair to Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona, Fla., Johnson C. Smith University just outside Charlotte, N.C., and North Georgia College, among other schools.
In the process, school officials say they received nearly a quarter of a million dollars in scholarship money.
“They were really excited,” said DeKalb school transition specialist Kevin Ware, who organized the event.
Other colleges in attendance included Life University in Marietta, Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., the University of West Georgia and Georgia State.
Previous years’ events allowed the students to excel at this year’s fair, which saw more participation from colleges.
“They’ve learned to ask the appropriate questions,” Ware said. “The sense of urgency to get accepted is spreading with the seniors. The juniors are asking themselves, am I on track?”
