Pre-kindergarten centers across the state plan to celebrate Georgia Pre-K Week, welcoming state, business and community leaders to visit classrooms and learn about early childhood education.

The state's Pre-K Week is Oct. 6-10 and brings together a diverse group of leaders, placing them in pre-k classrooms in all 159 counties, drawing attention to Georgia's program that started nearly 22 years ago. Some 84,000 children participate in the state's pre-k program.

Gov. Nathan Deal and First Lady Sandra Deal will be among the first leaders to read a children’s book to a pre-k class. Copies of “Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons,” written by Georgia children’s author Eric Litwin and illustrated by Georgia artist James Dean, were donated for the event.

Georgia Pre-K Week is developed in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. Partners for the event include the advocacy organization Voices for Georgia's Children as well as Georgia Power and Scholastic, among other groups.
