Gwinnett students receive college scholarships

May 5, 2015

A Los Angeles-based organization that works to ensure all students in urban school districts succeed academically announced Tuesday it will give 26 Gwinnett County students $20,000 a piece in college scholarships.

The Broad Foundation in September named Gwinnett a co-recipient of its 2014 prize for its efforts to close the achievement gap between white and minority students, along with wealthy and less affluent students. The Orange County school district in Orlando was the other recipient. Each school district received $500,000 in scholarships.

Graduating students in the two school districts had to apply for the scholarships. The 26 Gwinnett students will receive $5,000 a year.

Gwinnett is one of only two school districts in the nation to win the Broad Prize twice. The Houston, Tex. Independent School is the other multiple winner. Gwinnett won the prize in 2010.
