About one in four Gwinnett County schools are “excellent” environments for learning, according to annual state rankings released Wednesday.

Thirty-seven Gwinnett schools received scores of 5, meaning excellent, on the state’s School Climate Star Ratings. No school district had more schools with excellent ratings, although Gwinnett is the state’s largest school district. Twenty Gwinnett schools received a 5 rating last year.

Only two Gwinnett schools, the Gwinnett InterVention Education West center and Gwinnett Online Campus, received a 1, or unsatisfactory, rating. The bulk of Gwinnett schools, 70 of them, received a 4, or an above average rating. Gwinnett schools that opened in August were not included in the ratings.

Three of the Buford city schools received excellent ratings. The other received an above average rating.

The school climate rating system creates the scores by using student disciplinary data, attendance records and surveys filled out by students, parents and teachers asking their opinions about whether their school is a safe place to learn.

Statewide, the number of schools with unsatisfactory ratings increased by 20 from last year while 75 fewer schools received excellent ratings.
