With the beginning of school this week in Fulton County, construction and maintenance crews put finishing touches on more than 23 school renovation projects and opened one new elementary school in the College Park area.

Fulton system leaders shared that and other details at the school board’s meeting Tuesday, where members were told that, so far, things have run smoothly since school started Monday.

More than 96,000 students attended school the first day, 725 new teachers have been hired and 760 buses picked up students along 1,600 routes. Four schools are also under construction to open in 2015-2016.

The Fulton County school system is the fourth-largest district in Georgia with a projected 2014-2015 enrollment of approximately 96,300 students – an expected increase of about 1,200 from the previous school year.

The system includes 101 schools: 58 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 17 high schools and seven startup charter schools.
