Chess teams from Forsyth County's Daves Creek Elementary School recently brought home their latest trophies, won at the National Elementary Championships in Nashville, Tenn. In March, for the second consecutive year, the school won the State Elementary School Championship. In April, the students went on to win a team trophy in the National High School Chess Championships in Atlanta. Finally, in May, at the National Elementary Championships, the team tied for 12th place in the novice section, the largest of the sections with 59 teams and 328 players from across the country. And, in the section for new players, the team earned a 10th place trophy. Daves Creek's after-school chess program is one of the largest in the state. It is run by Championship Chess, a DeKalb County-based scholastic chess program whose coaches teach chess in after-school and community programs across metro Atlanta.
