A federal law called the Clery Act requires the nation’s colleges and universities to release crime data by Oct. 1 for the most recent three years in a report that includes efforts to improve safety. The University of Georgia, which has about 37,000 students, has a report with detailed data on crimes ranging from sexual assault to criminal damage.

Here are five items of note from the University of Georgia’s report:

  • There were 16 reported rapes on its main campus. One claim was unfounded. UGA spokesman Greg Trevor said university officials have been trying to increase the reporting of sex crimes. He also talked about the university's efforts to provide counseling for students who've reported being raped.
  • There were 229 reports of underage possession of alcohol.
  • Twenty battery complaints.
  • 392 reported larcenies.
  • Three domestic violence complaints.
