Five metro Atlanta schools were named "schools of excellence" by National PTA, an award that recognizes efforts to increase parent engagement at school.

Nationally, 170 schools earned the two-year designation. Six were in Georgia. The National PTA started the program as a way to promote “measurable progress” in education, health and safety, and arts and culture. The group used family surveys to see which schools showed growth.

The Georgia winners are: Fulton — Barnwell Elementary and Milton High; Cobb — Brumby Elementary and King Springs Elementary; Decatur City — College Heights Early Childhood Learning; Savannah-Chatham County — Carrie E. Gould Elementary.
