Cobb County school board members are expected to name a high-ranking district leader as interim superintendent to replace outgoing superintendent Michael Hinojosa.

Chris Ragsdale, deputy superintendent of operational support, is expected to be named as the sole finalist for the leadership position during a press conference on Thursday, according to a person with direct knowledge of the selection.

The interim superintendent is likely to serve close to year while board members conduct a search for a new full-time superintendent. Hinojosa’s resignation is effective May 31.

Hinojosa announced at a meeting in February he would step down. He says he wants to move to Texas to assist with aging parents and is taking a consulting job. Hinojosa has led the district — Georgia’s second-largest with close to 107,000 students in about 114 schools — since July 2011.
