Cobb school board members have voted to reverse plans to build a larger theater at North Cobb High School following complaints by some parents.

At a meeting Thursday, board members voted 6-1 to return the project to its original plan for 750 seats. The board had previously voted in August to expand the new theater to 1,100 seats for an extra cost of $3 million.

But parents have argued the expansion is not justified considering SPLOST-funded (special purpose local option sales tax revenues) projects in other needier parts of Cobb have been delayed due to lack of funding.

The proposed expansion to 1,100 seats has also been previously rejected by Cobb’s Facilities & Technology Citizens Oversight Committee.

Board chairman Randy Scamihorn initially proposed the theater expansion to serve the communities of Acworth and Kennesaw, as well as all of Cobb, and the projected increasing population of North Cobb High.
