Legislation that would enable military service members to choose which public school their children attend was filed Feb. 1 in the state House.

House Bill 224 is sponsored by Chairman of the House Military Affairs Study Committee Dave Belton, R-Buckhead.

Military service members who live on bases or in off-base military housing would be able to send their children to any public school within the school system where the base or housing is located starting next school year, the bill states.

Belton wrote in an op-ed for 21st Century Partnership that K-12 education must be improved for military families to prevent base closures in Georgia.
