• Pinecrest Academy senior Andy Rodriguez earned a perfect score on his Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture Exam, taken when he was a junior, in 2014. Rodriguez was one of only 91 students in the world to earn every point possible on the exam.
• Jonathan Johnson, a sophomore at Westlake High School, was one of only ten Scouts chosen nationwide to hand-deliver the Boy Scouts of America's Report to the Nation last month, an annual report to our nation's leaders of Scouting's impact across the country. Jonathan is a member of the Chick-fil-A Youth Leadership Academy and golf team and is the community service project leader. Scouting also inspired Jonathan's entrepreneurial spirit, as he began his own peer tutoring business this year. In the Atlanta Area Council, 634 Scouts earned the rank of Eagle, contributing about 104,000 hours of service to the community and Scouts collected nearly 147,000 pounds of food through Scouting for Food.
• Kennesaw State University's College of Continuing and Professional Education has been recognized by the University Professional and Continuing Education Association with two national awards. Karen Smith, the college's manager of strategic initiatives, won the Adelle F. Robertson Emerging Professional Continuing Educator Award. The award recognizes the leadership and contributions of an outstanding continuing professional educator who has entered the field within the past five to 10 years. Moises Arroyo, ESL program graduate, claimed the Outstanding Continuing Education Student – Noncredit Award. It recognizes outstanding student achievement in professional and continuing education. A native of Mexico, Arroyo completed all six levels of the College's ESL Certificate program. Smith and Arroyo both won UPCEA South regional awards in the same category last fall, which qualified them for the national honor.
• Ivy Francis, a junior at Druid Hills High School of Decatur, has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston June 24-26. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics. She was nominated by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology.
• Parents of incoming kindergarten students in Fulton County will be able to register those children on Wednesday, May 6, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday, May 7, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Other new elementary students entering school in August can be registered then. Parents should visit the school their child will attend in the fall. A list of documents needed for registration, including immunization requirements for kindergartners and pre-kindergarten students, is posted here. A notarized affidavit of residence is also mandatory. In addition, 1,674 spaces in pre-kindergarten classes are available at 42 elementary schools. Pre-kindergarten registration dates vary by school and enrollment is handled by a lottery system.
