Steven Vue recently won an honorable mention in the Dupont Challenge Science Essay Competition. The sophomore at South Cobb High School was one of 25 of the 9,000 participants to win the mention. Lauren Duncan, a student from Holy Innocents Episcopal High School, recently won a "Walking Tree Travel" journalism scholarship to visit Spain this summer. As part of the program, Lauren will conduct a community service project and write an article about her experience.

Jemelleh Coes, a special education English language Arts and reading teacher from Langston Chapel Middle School in Statesboro was recently recognized as Georgia's Teacher of the Year. As part of the recognition, she will serve as an advocate for public education in Georgia.
Coes runs the Delta Academy, which encourages middle school girls to get involved in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. She is also a mentor for homeless girls in Bulloch County.
David DuBose, a music teacher at Marietta High School, was named runner-up.

Two students from Walton High School were recently named Presidential Scholars. George Q. Fei and Diane Smyser, along with their most influential teachers, will be honored in a special ceremony with a Presidential Scholar Medallion.
The students were selected based on their “academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals,” according to the committee.

David Resnick, 18, of Roswell and Kelsey Hirsch, 13, of Cumming, were recently honored for their volunteer efforts by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Resnick a senior at Centennial High School, has held a party for 750 homeless children through the organization Creating Connected Communities. Kelsey, an eighth-grader at Piney Grove Middle School, sold more than $15,000 worth of Bands4RAINN, a wrist band she designed to benefit victims of sexual abuse.
