Fulton County Schools has been named a first-place winner in the 19th annual Magna Awards program. Sponsored by the National School Boards Association’s American School Board Journal, the award recognizes districts for programs advancing student learning and encouraging community involvement in schools. Fulton was recognized for restructuring as a charter school system.The charter model allows schools to use resources in a targeted manner to better support student achievement and curriculum innovation.

Two University of Georgia Honors students are among 50 students nationwide who have been awarded 2013 Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation Scholarships. The scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded annually to outstanding sophomores and juniors pursuing careers focused on environmental or Native American public policy. UGA has had 12 Udall scholars in 10 years. This year's recipients are Sara Black, a junior in the UGA Foundation Fellows Program from Birmingham, Ala., and Ian Karra, a junior from Roswell. Black is pursuing degrees in anthropology and in ecology. Karra is pursuing degrees in economics and finance.

Five Fulton County seniors have been named winners in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition for African-American high school students. Each has won a $2,500 cash prize or an equivalent scholarship. They are: Amanda L. Richards, Alpharetta High School; Justin O. Bryant, Northview High School; Morgan Green and Taylor M. Green, Roswell High; and Helena Baldwin, Tri-Cities High School.

Thirty-six DeKalb County students have been selected as finalists for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program. The program recognized gifted and talented high school juniors and takes place this summer at Valdosta State University.
