Atlanta University Center students wage social media campaign against sexual assault, harassment on campus
Students at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse and Spelman colleges have started a trending social media campaign aimed at stopping sexual assault and harassment on its campuses.
The campaign, called #WeKnowWhatYouDid, has resulted in hundreds of Twitter posts demanding a stop to such actions and calls to out offenders. Some signs posted on the campuses accused administrators of protecting rapists and said campus police removed the signs. Some have posted responses raising concerns that some of the messages could be slanderous.
Spelman College president Mary Schmidt Campbell wrote a message to students and staff Thursday urging accusers to report complaints to campus police or officials. Morehouse released a statement detailing its efforts to stop such acts, including programs to educate students about sexual assault and harassment.
All U.S. colleges and universities are required each October as part of the Clery Act to make public an annual report on campus crime for the prior calendar year. The three campuses reported one rape and six instances of dating violence in 2016.
