The Atlanta Board of Education paused Monday to hold a moment of silence to honor George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

Board Chairman Jason Esteves started the online meeting by asking elected officials and others to reflect on recent, high-profile deaths of African Americans.

Floyd's killing in Minneapolis while in police custody

sparked nationwide protests that rolled through Atlanta over the weekend. While many Atlanta protests were largely peaceful, looting and vandalism also took place.

“We hope for peace in these times, but we also understand and reflect upon the challenges that our black community faces given the legacy of racism and oppression that has plagued this country for hundreds of years,” Esteves said.
