The founder of a nationally-acclaimed middle school academy in southeast Atlanta is a finalist for a $1 million international education prize.

Ron Clark, founder of the Ron Clark Academy, was named Tuesday one of eight American finalists for the Global Teacher Prize, an annual award created last year to recognize an exceptional teacher and to spotlight the work of teachers. The prize was started by the London-based Varkey Foundation. There are 50 finalists worldwide.

The Ron Clark Academy has 113 students, according to its website. The nonprofit academy has won several awards since it opened in 2007 and has hosted more than 30,000 educators who come to learn about Clark's approach and techniques.

The winner of the Global Teacher Prize will be announced on March 16.
