Atlanta Public Schools will consider leasing space for $14,705 a month to use as kindergarten classrooms to relieve overcrowding at Morningside Elementary School.

The Atlanta Board of Education on Monday is scheduled to vote on a two-year lease agreement with Atlanta Metropolitan Cathedral, 999 Briarcliff Road. The district would spend about $565,000 to prepare the space for school operations, plus spend $14,705 a month in rent. Rent would increase by about 3 percent in the second year to $15,155 a month, according to board documents.

Earlier this school year, the board approved a rezoning plan intended to help address overcrowding in the schools that feed into Grady High School. District officials said they would search for a Morningside annex building as part of the solution but cautioned if they were unsuccessful in locating a site then additional steps would need to be taken to relieve overcrowding.
