Two subsidiaries of a global chemicals company that has its North American headquarters in Atlanta will pay around $800,000 to settle claims they violated federal chemical and pesticide laws, the Environmental Protection Agency announced Thursday.
Kemira Chemicals and Kemira Water Solutions are units of Finland-based Kemira Group, which has operations in Atlanta, Marietta, Columbus and Savannah. Efforts were made to reach Kemira for comment on the EPA fines.
The chemicals operation was accused of selling and distributing unregistered and misbranded pesticides and not properly reporting the production of pesticides to the agency, the EPA said in a release. The location of the violations was not disclosed.
The EPA said Kemira Chemicals has corrected the alleged violations and will pay a civil penalty of $301,600.
Kemira Water Solutions faced 27 violations of federal toxic substance control regulations, the EPA said. The violations related to the unit not properly reporting the locations of facilities producing certain chemical substances and production volume. The specific facilities and chemicals were not disclosed.
Kemira Water Solutions agreed to pay a civil penalty of $503,110, the EPA said.
Kemira’s Georgia operations include customer service and research and development operations in Atlanta, and chemicals manufacturing in Marietta, Columbus and Savannah. The company also has manufacturing operations in other parts of the country.
