Evidently, she thinks jail is no doggone place for her.

Back in February, Rogue — an aptly named, 15-pound Yorkshire terrier — was being inducted into the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office’s Operation Second Chance program, where she was destined to take up residence at the local jail and be assigned an inmate handler who would help prepare her for adoption.

Rogue, though, wasn’t cut out to do hard time. During a friendly outing at Lawrenceville’s Rhodes Jordan Park, she managed to escape from her volunteer escort.

“She’s been on the run ever since,” sheriff’s office spokesman Maj. Kirk Williamson said Wednesday.

In the weeks since her escape, authorities believe the fugitive pooch has been “pretty much staying in the park” and up the street in the downtown Lawrenceville square, living off scraps and other offerings from residents unwittingly abetting her escape efforts. The sheriff’s office has set up several (humane) traps, which the scofflaw has wandered into more than once — before well-meaning citizens set her free again.

“She’s been seen multiple times,” Williamson said, “we just can’t seem to catch up to her.”

As of Wednesday, Rogue remained on the lam. Authorities hope that cheeseburgers will eventually lure her back into a trap, and ask that anyone who comes into contact with the pooch not to feed or chase her.

“She’s extremely smart,” Deputy Shannon Volkodav said. “Very street smart.”
