An 18-year-old driver was killed and his brother was injured Monday morning after he hit a pole on a Houston freeway, causing the car to split in half, KTRK reported.
The teen was driving a green Saturn around 3:42 a.m. when he hit a pole that was holding up a sign on Houston's East Freeway, the Houston Chronicle reported. Police said the driver was on the feeder to the freeway when he lost control of the vehicle, according to KPRC.
The driver was thrown from the vehicle but his 15-year-old brother was in the part of the car that remained intact, the television station reported.
The younger teen is expected to survive, KTRK reported.
The names of the two teens have not been released.
Houston police Sgt. David Rose said he did not believe alcohol was involved and could not say if the driver was speeding, KTRK reported.
Rose said he was “not sure” if the driver was wearing a seat belt.
“I suspect the driver was not,” Rose told the television station. “I believe the passenger was wearing a seat belt."
