A Gwinnett County woman was charged with animal cruelty more than a month after police say she threw multiple kittens from a moving car on Peachtree Dunwoody Road.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old La’Jhay Latese Mims of Lawrenceville, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty and summoned to appear before a judge, according to the Sandy Springs Police Department. The charges were filed after an investigation conducted by Officer Philip Housand, who responded to the original call July 5.

In an announcement Monday, police detailed Housand’s investigation of the case, which included interviewing witnesses, reviewing street cameras and obtaining a court order from a judge. The investigation led Housand to identify Mims as the driver suspected of throwing the kittens from the car.

When he responded to the call, Housand was only able to find one of the kittens, which he decided to adopt while waiting for animal control to respond. The Sandy Springs police announcement said he named the kitten Holly because she was found on Hollis Cobb Circle.

No other information was provided by police.
