Georgia now has certified ‘lactation consultants’

May 2, 2016

Georgia now has the power to license and regulate “lactation consultants” under legislation signed by Gov. Nathan Deal.

The new law requires that lactation consultants – professionals who help new mothers with breastfeeding – to get certified by the state by July 2018. Applicants must pass a criminal background check and be in good standing with the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

It also creates a five-member lactation consultant advisory board to draft regulations, set fees for the licenses and impose sanctions on wayward consultants.

The measure, House Bill 649, takes effect in July.
