A Cherokee County man on Monday was convicted of shooting his wife in the head five times and killing her as she drove down a highway two days after Christmas in 2016, officials said.

Darrell Eaker of Ball Ground was found guilty of malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, criminal damage to property in the first degree and discharging a firearm near a highway, Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace said.

He was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 16 consecutive years, according to Wallace.

Prosecutors said Eaker shot his wife, 43-year-old Audra Eaker, as she drove down Ga. 92 on Dec. 27, 2016. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple was separated at the time of the deadly shooting, police said in 2016.
