The July Fourth holiday weekend is off to a wet start with moderate rain falling all across the northern Atlanta suburbs.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said the southern counties will get in on the showers before the day is over. The rain is already making for slick conditions for the morning commute and could cause extra delays when travelers hit the roads Friday afternoon en route to their holiday destinations.

“It’s going to be wet off and on throughout the day, so it’s kind of an inside day,” Monahan said. “But you want to be outside, enjoying some nice summer weather over the weekend? You got it. Saturday and Sunday are going to be great.”

A cold front is triggering the wet weather Friday, but Monahan expects the front to move south by 8 a.m. Saturday. It will clear out the showers and leave North Georgia cooler and less humid, he said.

There could still be a few clouds around Saturday morning for those taking their marks at the start of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race. The first wave of runners will start at 6:30 a.m., when temperatures are expected to be in the low 60s.

“Early tomorrow morning, there might be a few clouds but the humidity is going to be lower,” Monahan said. “There’s not going to be any rain to worry about, and then through the afternoon our sky gradually becomes partly to mostly sunny.”

Saturday’s projected high is 85 degrees. There will be nothing to stop the sunshine Sunday, which Monahan said should reach a high of 87 degrees, even as humidity remains low.

“Really couldn’t ask for a better day, weather-wise,” Monahan said of the Fourth of July forecast.

Volume is light on metro Atlanta interstates Friday morning, but it is expected to pick up throughout the day, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. The biggest delays on the wet roads are in Dunwoody, where traffic was being paced to clear overnight construction on I-285 West.

There are still 30 minutes of backups through Doraville, the Traffic Center reported.

In Midtown Atlanta, authorities have already closed several roads in preparation for the road race, according to the Traffic Center. Peachtree Road will be closed north of Lenox at 2 a.m. Saturday, and parts of Lenox, Wieuca, Roxboro and Kingsboro roads will close at 4:30 a.m.
