The suspect accused of shooting the officer in Tucson was in custody after a one-hour standoff, the Arizona Republic reported. The suspect was identified as Ryan Schlesinger, 26, KVOA reported.

The marshal was serving a felony warrant on a man wanted on charges of stalking a law enforcement officer, Tucson police Chief Chris Magnus told the television station.

On Twitter, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey expressed his condolences and prayers to the law enforcement officer's family.

According to the Republic, the last deputy U.S. marshal to die in the line of duty in Tucson was Edmund L. Schweppe, who was fatally shot while escorting two prisoners to a dentist's office in the downtown area on Sept. 15, 1952, according to the Marshals Service website.
