Three people were injured in a severe single-car crash that shut down I-85 South in Gwinnett County for more than two hours Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The wreck took place around 10:30 a.m. near Hamilton Mill Road, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Traffic cameras showed a dark-colored SUV with damage on all sides at the scene of the crash, and Gwinnett police later said one of the passengers had been thrown from the vehicle.

According to the initial investigation, the driver of the SUV tried to change lanes but swerved when they noticed someone in the next lane. The driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the median wall, causing the vehicle to roll.

The front-seat passenger was thrown from the SUV and suffered life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver and another passenger were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

No charges or traffic citations have been issued, but police said the investigation remains open. None of the people injured have been publicly identified.

The crash, which was cleared around 12:30 p.m., happened about 6½ miles northeast of the I-85/I-985 split, not far from Chateau Elan. At least eight emergency vehicles were at the scene, including multiple police cars, an ambulance and a fire engine.
