A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he attempted to flee from police responding to reports of a fight at a Smyrna sports bar that escalated into gunfire.
The man, who has not been identified, crashed his car while trying to elude the responding officers, Smyrna police spokesman Lt. Louis Defense told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The man was taken to the hospital as a matter of protocol and was “resting comfortably at the Smyrna City Jail” as of Wednesday afternoon, Defense said.
Smyrna police plan for the man to be transferred and booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center by Wednesday night.
The incident began when a fight was reported at Chicago Pizza and Sports Grille on Highlands Parkway around 3 a.m., Defense confirmed. As officers responded to the bar, gunshots were reported at the same location. At the scene, the bar manager and other patrons pointed out the suspected shooter as he tried to drive away.
The man hit a Smyrna police car in what Defense described as a “little fender bender.” The man led police on a brief chase and crashed after a pursuing officer performed a PIT maneuver near the intersection of Bolton and Browntown roads.
Smyrna police have charged the man with aggravated assault and attempting to elude.
