A crash involving a tractor-trailer carrying liquid nitrogen Monday closed down a busy road in Suwanee, officials said.

The crash took place at the intersection of McGinnis Ferry Road and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard before 4:45 p.m., Suwanee police spokesman Capt. Robert Thompson said. The truck and a passenger car collided, resulting in minor injuries for a woman in the smaller car.

No leaks were reported, according to Thompson, and hazardous material specialists with the Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to the scene.

The westbound lanes of McGinnis Ferry Road were closed for about two hours while police and the hazmat crew worked to safely move the disabled truck.

Liquid nitrogen is nitrogen gas cooled to an extremely low temperature; it is non-toxic but will freeze any organic material it touches. When spilled in large amounts, it creates a thick fog of nitrogen gas that can displace enough air that it’s possible for a person to suffocate.
