A 68-year-old Athens woman has died of injuries suffered earlier this month in a head-on crash outside a Sam’s Club parking lot, authorities said.

Athens police responded to the collision on Atlanta Highway shortly before 11:30 a.m. May 3, department spokesman Kenneth Brooks said Thursday.

According to police, a Dodge Journey was traveling east when a Ford Edge SUV heading in the opposite direction failed to yield, turned in front of it and struck the Dodge.

At the time of the crash, there were two people inside the Dodge and three inside the Ford. All five suffered injuries and were taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

One of the passengers in the Ford, Gloria Thurmond, died of her injuries Wednesday, police said.

As of Thursday morning, police said they had not filed charges against the Ford’s driver.

The incident marked the seventh fatal crash authorities have investigated in Athens-Clarke County this year.
