A University of Georgia student is behind bars after allegedly ambushing his ex-girlfriend and forcing her into her apartment at knifepoint as she returned home this weekend, police said.
Body camera footage showed police handcuff Shimobi Obijuru and rescue the woman, who is also a student at the university.
Officers responded to the apartment on International Drive on Sunday evening after several residents called with concerns about the student’s well-being, Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Geoffrey Gilland said.
According to a police report, Obijuru, 20, walked up to his ex-girlfriend and another man as they returned to the complex, tackled the woman and forced her into her upstairs apartment with a knife to her throat.
Once inside, police allege the man tried to shove the woman into her bedroom closet.
Police kicked in the door and arrested Obijuru, who was sweating and not wearing a shirt, the bodycam footage appears to show.
The woman, who was not seriously injured, told police she and Obijuru had been in a relationship but recently broke up, according to the incident report. She also said he had been ordered by the court to stay away from her.
Obijuru is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery and simple battery, Clarke County jail records show. He is being held without bond.
