A Smyrna police officer was arrested Saturday afternoon following a domestic violence incident at his home.

Darryl L. Whitfield, an 8-year veteran who works in the patrol division, was charged with simple battery, simple assault and third degree cruelty to children for allowing a minor to witness family violence, said Smyrna police spokesman Michael Smith. Each of the charges is a misdemeanor.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has submitted an open records request with Cobb police to obtain a copy of the incident report.

Smyrna police’s internal affairs division is conducting its own investigation of Whitfield, who was suspended with pay pending the outcome of the probe, Smith said. Whitfield was released from the Cobb County Detention Center after posting an $11,220 bond.
