Union City police officer faces 2 felonies after domestic incident

The Union City Police Department arrested one of their own, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Lt. Melvin Echols was taken into police custody Thursday on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and third-degree child cruelty, jail records show. His arrest is connected to a domestic incident that happened on July 5, Channel 2 reported.

Echols is currently on administrative leave without pay, the news station reported. He is being held in the Fulton County jail on a $17,500 bond, records show.

AJC.com has reached out to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for more information on his booking.

He was hired by Union City in 2007 after working as a jailer for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for about six years, according to Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training records. In May 2017, he was promoted to lieutenant.

He has not had any past disciplinary history, according to POST records.
