University of Georgia junior and U.S. Swim Team member Gunnar Bentz, who was detained in Brazil last month following a bogus robbery claim scandal involving Ryan Lochte, received a four-month suspension from competition and was ordered to complete 10 hours of community service.
The suspension was handed down Thursday.
Bentz will not receive a monthly stipend, support or access to training centers and other facilities from USA Swimming or the United States Olympic Committee during the suspension, the committee said Thursday.
Additionally, he will not be permitted to join Team USA for its White House visit in connection with the Rio 2016 Games. And he cannot attend an annual “Golden Goggles” event in 2016.
Lochte, who exaggerated claims of being robbed while competing in the Summer Olympics, received a 10-month suspension from competition, and will not be allowed to participate in the 2017 world championship meet.
In a tweet, the Bentz said he accepted the punishment.
