Police found nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana after a box truck drove the wrong way down a Doraville road on Monday night.

The driver, Alejandro Perez, ran a stop sign at the intersection of Buena Vista Avenue and Chestnut Drive before Doraville police stopped him, police spokesman Gene Callaway said. During a check of the truck, police uncovered 169 bundles of marijuana, valued between $1.6 million and $1.9 million.

Chief John King said this incident highlights the need for continued police vigilance, despite ongoing protests and threats.

“Our police officers are under a tremendous amount of pressure — especially considering everything going on around the country — and they’re still out there doing their job every day,” King said. “If somebody can bring almost 4,000 pounds of drugs into our residential areas, what else is coming through?”

At the time of the arrest, Perez told police he didn’t know what was in the back of the truck. He also said he didn’t have a license.

Perez was arrested on a charge of marijuana trafficking. He is in custody at the DeKalb County Jail.
