LaGrange police have arrested a 17-year-old wanted in connection with the Feb. 9 killing of a man investigators believe was shot to death after arranging to purchase a firearm.

Travis McFarland was arrested Friday in Heard County and charged with the murder of James Jake Ponder. Investigators are still searching for another suspect they say was involved.

Police believe Ponder was shot during a robbery after he and a friend picked up McFarland and another man on Troup Street.

Investigators said Ponder had communicated with individuals regarding the purchase of a firearm on the night of the incident, and that he was in the area to meet and complete the purchase when the attempted robbery and shooting occurred.

Ponder’s friend drove him to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center after the shooting.

LaGrange police said they also have obtained arrest warrants for Omare Atcherson in connection with Ponder’s death.
