A woman is in Gwinnett County Jail after attempting — and failing — to rob a taxi driver Tuesday.

Gwinnett police were called about two people fighting near the Las Palmas Apartments complex dumpsters, Cpl. Michele Pihera, a spokeswoman for Gwinnett police, said.

Officers saw Alan Hernandez, 32, standing over 22-year-old Desiree Lindsey and hitting her repeatedly in the head with what appeared to be a handgun, Pihera said.

Hernandez stepped away from Lindsey after an officer ordered him to. Then, officers noticed a large pool of blood around Lindsey’s head and called an ambulance, Pihera said.

Officers soon discovered that there was more to the fight than there initially appeared to be.

“Lindsey said, ‘This isn’t what you think it is,’” Pihera said in a press release. “She told the officer that she owed someone some money so she tried to commit a robbery to pay that person off.”

Lindsey told officers she got into the taxi and hit the driver, Hernandez, over the head with a gun in an attempt to rob him.

Hernandez said he was afraid that Lindsey would kill him, so he fought back against the attack. He got out of the car, took the gun from her and beat her with it. Hernandez used his walkie-talkie to call for help, Pihera said.

Officers said the gun Hernandez used to beat Lindsey was broken into two pieces while he was hitting her in the head with it.

Hernandez had a cut on the back of his head and minor cuts along his shoulders, arms and legs, but he did not need to go to the hospital, authorities said.

Lindsey was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center for her injuries. After her treatment, she was arrested for aggravated assault and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery.

She also had outstanding warrants through Gwinnett and Duluth police departments, Pihera said.

Hernandez was not charged with any crimes.
