A man who police believe shot and killed a DeKalb County mother of two Sunday night later took his own life, authorities said.
Officers responding to reports of a shooting just before 10 p.m. Sunday in the 2800 block of Vinings Ridge Terrace found 35-year-old Kristy Robinson dead of a gunshot wound, according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish.
“Detectives later determined the victim and suspect were involved in an argument and this escalated to the suspect shooting the victim inside the home,” Parish said in an email. “The victim’s 15- and 8-year-old children were home at the time of the shooting, but were not injured.”
Parish said the suspect was the father of the younger child.
About an hour after the DeKalb shooting, Atlanta police were sent to an apartment in the 2500 block of Center Street in northwest Atlanta on a report of a suicide.
A witness told officers that the man was watching football with his girlfriend when he got up to get a beer from the kitchen.
When the man returned, he sat on the side of the bed and asked the woman if she loved him, Atlanta police Officer C. Butler wrote in his incident report.
“She stated ‘yes,’ and then he produced a silver pistol with his left hand and shot himself once in the head,” Butler wrote. “While we were on scene, we were notified by DeKalb County police that the (dead man) was wanted in a homicide which had just occurred.”
Butler said that DeKalb detectives arrived and told him that the man “had just left DeKalb County after shooting the mother of his child.”
The Fulton County medical examiner’s office was withholding the man’s name until his relatives could be notified.
