Family members beat a man to death with a baseball bat after he stabbed and killed one of their relatives, authorities said Wednesday.
Deputies responded Tuesday afternoon to a report of a stabbing in the 1100 block of Old Hog Mountain Road in Barrow County, according to a post on the sheriff's office Facebook page.
When they got to the scene, they found the body of Stanley Hugh Ivy Jr. in a shed and a man who was “belligerent and combative,” Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said in a statement. Ivy, 47, of Hoschton, had been stabbed to death.
The combative man, identified as Whitney Stovall, 31, of Winder, was placed into custody after a struggle with deputies and taken to a local hospital, authorities said.
Barrow authorities later determined Stovall stabbed Ivy multiple times. Ivy’s family tried to intervene and struck Stovall multiple times with a baseball bat, Miles said.
“Stovall later succumbed to injuries sustained from family members attempting to help Ivy Jr. and he was pronounced deceased at a local hospital,” the Barrow sheriff’s office said in the Facebook post.
No other details were released.
However, Channel 2 Action News spoke to a friend who said Ivy was merely trying to help Stovall with personal problems when the deadly altercation occurred.
“Due to the complexity of the situation,” Miles said, “Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith requested assistance from the GBI Athens Office.”
The investigation is ongoing.
